Ever wondered if you’re allergic to the dentist? Some patients really may experience allergies when visiting the dentist. These reactions aren’t caused by the dentist themselves but could be caused by the materials that they use, such as latex. If you ever experience any dental allergies, make it known to your Dr. Sachs before your next visit.
Allergic reactions to latex are brought on by proteins found in latex products. Similar to a peanut allergy, the body reacts as if the material is hazardous. Antibodies are issued by the immune system to fight the hazardous material. Other chemicals such as histamine are cycled through the circulatory system. This causes an allergic reaction.
Evidence of a latex allergy may include:
- Tingling, red skin and/or eyes
- Rash or hives
- Raspy throat
- Sneezing
These are minor signs of a latex allergy. Anaphylaxis is when a patient experiences a more intense allergic reaction. The symptoms of anaphylaxis can be lethal. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience the following conditions:
- Wooziness
- Queasiness and sickness
- Confusion
- Loss of awareness
- Poor or rapid pulse
