Our previous post discussed dental allergies that some patients may experience. This post discusses more in detail other types of dental allergies that may occur.
What is Contact Dermatitis?
Contact dermatitis is a reaction that happens when our skin comes into contact with substances such as makeup, soaps, or perfumes. Patients may experience dry, tingling, and burning skin as a side effect to this reaction.
Contact dermatitis comes in two different classifications:
- Allergic contact dermatitis is a result of an allergic reaction to materials such as poison ivy, nickel, latex gloves, jewelry, or cosmetics.
- Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when our skin has been irritated over time.
Materials like amalgam fillings, toothpaste and fluoride solutions, dental bonding, and porcelain may cause an allergic reaction for some patients.
The tongue, skin, gums, and lips are all common areas for this reaction to occur.
Am I Allergic to Local Anesthetic?
Many of us would not manage a tooth extraction or a tooth filling without a good dosage of local anesthetic. Has it ever occurred to you that some patients may be allergic to this substance? If you have never been exposed to local anesthetics before, an allergic reaction may occur.
When the local anesthetic is given, patients may experience swelling of the mouth, or, in extreme cases, difficulty breathing. Additional side effects may include feelings of panic, hyperventilation, contact dermatitis, and increased heart rate.
The allergic reaction may occur due to a sensitivity to epinephrine and preservatives such as methylparaben found in local anesthetics. Those who suspect that they may be allergic to novocaine or other local anesthetics can submit to a skin allergy test.
It's useful to remember to cover any important features of your medical history with your dental professional. This knowledge could be important in deciding if local anesthetics are the correct option for you.
