You have probably heard of fluoride, but did you ever wonder why it is so important for our teeth?
The enamel of your teeth is made up of minerals. Every day, these minerals go through demineralization and remineralization. Remineralization occurs when minerals are deposited back to your enamel through consuming things like calcium, fluoride, and phosphate. Demineralization occurs when these minerals dissolve due to acids.
Although this occurs daily, there are times when you may experience more demineralization than remineralization. When this happens on a consistent basis, your teeth can begin to decay. This is why fluoride is so important for the health of your teeth.
Different ways to get fluoride
For children’s teeth, the small amounts of fluoride found in certain foods and water can help protect their teeth. Fluoride has the greatest effect if it is incorporated into the tooth as it is growing. Therefore, drinking water with fluoride helps the teeth the most between birth and 15 years of age.
Fluoride treatments are available at the dentist’s office, which does benefit adult’s teeth. Fluoride from your dentist will be applied as a foam, gel or varnish. You will leave the fluoride on for a short time and the excess is then removed.
If your child is not getting enough fluoride, they may recommend a fluoride supplement, or prescription mouthwash or gels. It is important to carefully follow the dentist's instructions when using any prescribed products.
