One of the most commonly requested procedures that we hear from our patients is teeth whitening. There are many options available for creating a brighter smile, but, before you decide on which procedure to choose, it is important to know what can cause discoloration.
Causes of discoloration include:
Age: Tooth enamel begins to wear down as you age and as this occurs, the tooth becomes more yellow or begins to darken.
Tobacco: Any form of tobacco use can cause staining.
Medications: A common side effect of medication is discoloration.
Diet: Things such as coffee, wine, tea and foods with food coloring can easily stain teeth
Injury: Any trauma to your tooth has the possibility of causing discoloration.
It is important to know why your teeth are discolored because this has an effect on how your teeth will be treated.
Stay tuned for our next post where we will be discussing the different whitening options for your teeth.
