Common Causes of Dry Mouth
Dr. Sachs, DDS, in Rockford, IL, knows how important your oral health is to your overall health. One ailment, dry mouth, can cause issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and more. Unfortunately, dry mouth is often caused by something else. It is important to determine the trigger of your dry mouth, in order to properly treat it.
What are some common triggers of dry mouth?
Some common causes of dry mouth include: medications, diseases like anemia or diabetes, treatments like chemotherapy, alcohol and caffeine intake, smoking, and many other factors. All of these triggers can cause an inadequate flow of saliva, leading to dry mouth.
While any of the above can be triggers of dry mouth, the most common are medications. Many medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, include dry mouth as one of the most common side effects. Unfortunately, many of the medications are necessary as they include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Allergy Medications
- Pain Killers
- Antidepressants
- Inhalers
- Diuretics
In our next blog post, we will share some treatment options that are available to help alleviate dry mouth.
