Picking up from our last blog post, we continue to look at some of the many causes of sensitive teeth. Some of the most common causes on tooth sensitivity include:
Over-brushing - Brushing with too much force, a bad technique, or a brush that is too hard may cause tooth sensitivity. The reason for this is the enamel around the gum-line may be thinned out.
Dietary Choices - Food that is high in acid content like citrus fruit and juices, tomatoes, and pickles can cause the enamel of your teeth to erode and expose dentin.
Gum Disease - Over time, gum disease can cause your gums to recede and expose root dentin.
Inadequate Oral Hygiene - Not taking proper care of your teeth can lead to cavities, plaque and tartar build-up, and gum recession.
Grinding Your Teeth (Bruxism) - This may also cause your teeth to ache due to constant pressure. Grinding your teeth wears down the enamel and and exposes your root dentin.
Medical Conditions - Conditions like bulimia and acid reflux (GERD) can cause an increase of acid in your mouth. This acid will erode the enamel and expose your dentin leading to sensitive teeth.
Teeth Whitening - One major side effect of many teeth whitening procedures is tooth sensitivity. This will subside if you suspend your treatment and start back up after the sensitivity has subsided.
