Diabetes and Your Oral Health
Approximately 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes, so, chances are, you, or someone you know, is dealing with diabetes and its side effects. There are many commonly known side effects of diabetes, like increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. However, there are several side effects that are much less known. One of those side effects is gum disease!
Yes, you read that right: gum disease is a side effect of diabetes. Studies have shown that those suffering from diabetes are at an increased risk, and had a higher prevalence, of gum disease, than those who do not have diabetes. Additionally, this relationship works in the other direction as well. It was found that those who suffer from serious gum disease have less ability to control blood glucose levels, which causes diabetes to progress.
The reason that diabetes contributes to an increase of gum disease is outlined below:
- Diabetes decreases your body’s ability to fight off disease and infections.
- Your blood flow decreases, including circulation to the gum tissue.
- The amount of sugar in the mouth will become elevated.
With all of this being known, it is important for you to brush and floss properly, as well as see your dentist on a routine basis. If you are interested in learning more about how our dental health can affect our overall health, please see the Surgeon General’s Report.
